Any club should keep subs to a minimum if new blood from all walks of life are needed to keep our hobby fun and affordable....
The VSCC is on an entirely different strata these days - it is now a substantial corporation with GBP 460,000 reserves and pays GBP 250,000 in annual salaries alone, and turns over roughly a million pounds a year. It puts on an amazing number of events each year - many of which are organized and manned by enthusiastic volunteers who do it for nothing! I'm not sure how much sponsorship they receive, but you can be certain that is substantial too. It is a winning commercial formula, so they will aggressively go after anything or anyone who puts their situation at the slightest risk - hence the threatening e-mail I got from their club secretary. One of their forumists went this far:
"From a business perspective it's hard to fathom why the club would advertise a meeting in competition to their own event particularly when we have our vintage Prescott a few weeks later in early August. I thought that Prescott was a money cow for the VSCC. Joe public may not be so sophisticated as to understand whose event is the proper one."
How's that for absolute arrogance?
If Loton makes a loss, then the VSCC would dip ever so slightly into their enormous cash reserves and the staff would continue to draw their salaries from the corporation. If Pre-War Prescott makes a loss - then, as organizer, it comes directly out of my pocket - and with the hire of the hill alone costing GBP 5,500, the risk is not insignificant - to say the least. If Pre-War Prescott 2011 breaks even, then it will be the first time in four VMR Prescott events that it will have done so...
Anyway, the VSCC is by no means all bad and the old car movement would be very much the poorer without it - particularly the LCES - which is what the VSCC should be like (and was in the past). So let's draw a veil over all of this nonsense at this point, and look forward to our event, which should be a super (and proper!) day out for everyone. If you
are planning to come - please consider putting in your entry as I am sitting on the deposit invoice at the moment and waiting to be able to pay it.
As they say around these parts - so now you know how sausage is made!
