October pub meets

Post by Ian Grace »

We have two coming up. First, our second monthly meet at The Fountain, Tenbury Wells will take place starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday 15th October.

Then we have our traditional autumn meet at the Old Bull, Inkberrow on Sunday 20th October. This will once again take the form of an Oktoberfest, meeting in the morning and with an oompah band in the afternoon.

I am hoping to get to both with the fabric saloon.

All welcome to both meets.

An enjoyable evening of chat and good food was topped off with a very successful drive home in the dark... and rain. The LEDs have totally transformed the driving in the dark experience. I had no problem seeing where I was going. Another benefit is when I have a vehicle behind me the intensity of their headlamps threw a shadow of my car ahead of me that was so black the incandescent bulbs were unable to penetrate the darkness, so leaving me with pretty much zero visibility. Well, not any more! A following vehicle no longer has an impact on the view of the road ahead of me 8) As I approached Ombersley from the bridge at Holt Fleet it began to chuck it down very heavily, but the little vacuum-operated wiper had no difficulty keeping the screen clear of water. I also managed to stay almost completely dry, with just a little mist of dampness on my right arm. I suppose I should also mention, given the charging/running issues I've had in recent weeks, that the little Morris performed beautifully over the entire journey there and back. Around 45-50 miles without a single cough or splutter. The LEDs have also greatly reduced the power consumption. I might not have been charging the battery, but I don't think I was discharging it either. I'll do a voltage check on it later just to see what it's sitting at. It was on 6.39v before leaving home yesterday.

Glad you got home safely, Jonathan.

My journey home was much shorter - about five miles, but long enough to experience exactly what you said about cars' lights behind. Only when there was no traffic behind, or coming at me, did I really have a half chance of seeing the road ahead. Charging without lights on is at about 3 amps, with lights on, an 8 amp discharge. I suspect I could get a few more amps out of the dynamo if I adjusted the third brush, but even at 8 amps discharge, I've got plenty of miles on a good battery before the ignition would start to fail.

Other than that, the journey there and back was fine - except the ongoing issue with reverse. When I arrived at the pub and reversed into the slot, the gear lever could not be pulled back into neutral - until the engine was stopped, and then it slipped into neutral as advertised.

Until I get this sorted, I won;t be entering any driving tests!

Planning to be at the Old Bull on Sunday, but I'll also plan to get home in daylight. Hope to see you there.

By the way, Mark Measures, who brought along his Riley Lynx last night, joined the Register today.

Quick reminder about our autumn pub meet which takes place on Sunday at The Old Bull, Inkberrow, Worcestershire. It's looking like we will have a record Minor turnout.

Starts at 11 a.m. I'm planning to get there by 11 with the fabric saloon. See you there?

Yeah, I'll be there. The weather is looking awful, though. An update on the battery SOC; I checked it on Wednesday evening and it was still at 6.39v, so having the lights on for 40-50 miles, plus two cold starts, didn't have any impact on the state of charge. I'll call that a win.

Definitely a win, Jonathan.

Yep, the weather forecast is dreadful so I'll reluctantly be bringing the modern. Don't fancy an 80 mile round trip with a non-functioning vacuum wiper motor. Also, I may be heading straight down to Bristol after the meet to pick up an engine.

But I'll definitely be there as long as the roads aren't flooded like they were around Tenbury this week!

I've just returned from a day in Hay-on-Wye, in the modern, and apart from a few large puddles it was an easy drive there and back. I did take the only route Google Maps suggested wasn't closed west of Worcester, though, so made the journey there and back via the A44 to Leominster.

I did think you were brave* coming all that way in the fabric saloon  I only have 13 miles to cover, but the forecast suggests it'll be a nice drive home in the afternoon.

*or mad :P

Just heard from Clive Hamilton-Gould who is closely watching the weather forecast. I spoke to Robin Knott today (fabric saloon owner). He will be there, probably in the modern. George Rodford blew up his 2-seater on the way back from Prescott long course, so will also be in his modern.

The Teme is still raging here, I'm hoping I can get through to Worcester from here without diversion.

Oh dear, the record Minor turnout is looking a bit doubtful this evening.

Yep, as you saw - just two. The storm saw to that. Plus a Hornet and P Type. But a good crowd nevertheless!

My run home was much dryer than the morning run to the pub, but VERY windy and the Severn at Holt Fleet was into their garden. The Severn in Worcester was right up to the road with literally tons of trees and debris rammed up against the bridge arches.

Re The Fountain meet, I'm going to switch these from Tuesday evenings to Sunday lunchtimes for the dark months. So the November meet will be from noon on Sunday 17th (third Sundays), confirmed with the pub last night.

The drive there was certainly 'entertaining'. The weather conditions were dreadful, with heavy rain made more difficult with strong, gusty winds. The drive home was much more enjoyable, with dry sunny conditions allowing for the hood to be dropped, though it was still very blowy. I thought it best to remove my cap before the wind did it for me

Just returned from the Old Waggon and Horses monthly Breakfast Meet on the A451 between Kidderminster and Stourbridge.. I'm usually the only one there in a pre-war car but today saw around five of us, including a 1923 Model T (the oldest car there), a Morris Eight four-seat Tourer, a Rolls-Royce Tourer, and a 1928 Austin Six Saloon. I managed to have a chat with the owner of the Austin and he told me he has owned a couple of Bullnoses over the years, but the straight-six of the Austin makes for more relaxed hill climbs. I usually try to arrive by 9:30 as the field can fill up quite quickly.

I'm heading down to Prescott tomorrow - not for the Rally cars hillclimb but to meet up with Stuart Roper-Marshall to collect the '29 OHC engine I bought from his autojumble stall at VSCC Prescott long course. I'm meeting him at 11-30 at the Shutters in Gotherington. Anyone in the area who would like a pint and/or a bit of lunch, I'd be delighted to see them there.

I'm looking to dust the little Morris off tomorrow and pootle my way down to Sussex to watch (and drive among) the 'Old Crocks' as they make their way to Brighton on Sunday. I might wander over to Kent before I make my way home on Monday so I can tick off a good few counties I've yet to visit in the Minor.
