body / chassis fitting

body / chassis fitting
Did Morris fit the body frame directly on to the chassis rails, or was there any kind of packing in between? I know many vintage cars had a kind of bitumenised woven fabric strip between the wooden body bearers and the steel chassis rails. This was supposed to stop water from pooling there and rotting/rusting the surfaces, yet still have a little flexibility to accommodate body/chassis flexing.
Re: body / chassis fitting
I don't think any material was employed, but I d know that thin wedge-shaped slithers of wood were sometimes inserted under the body to level things up.
But I have always put material on the chassis rails before mounting bodies, for the reasons you give.
It would be interesting to hear from others on the subject.
