Vintage Minor Register

Welcome to Pre-War Shuttleworth 2018

Saturday 11th to Sunday 12th August

Very Important Update!

We have received news from the de Havilland Moth Club that the venue for this event has had to be changed.  The Shuttleworth Trust announced to the Moth Club
that they had double-booked Old Warden on the day with a hot rod rally and so they could not accommodate the Moth Club on the day.
Very quick work by the Moth Club resulted in a Plan B which is to gather at RAF Henlow on the same day.
RAF Henlow is only a few miles from Old Warden, so anyone who had already booked accommodation will not have a problem.

RAF Henlow is (for the time being), an operational RAF station and therefore anyone entering the station is required to request access in advance, for security reasons.
Therefore, any member intending to attend on the day should contact the Register well in advance, providing registration number, type and colour of their car,
along with the names of all occupants.  I will collate this information and pass it to RAF Henlow in advance of the day.

The good news is that RAF Henlow is a large grass airfield, ideal for Moths and the combined aircraft and car event will be private, and not open to the public,
so the atmosphere will be much more intimate than would have been the case at Old Warden.  Watch this space for further news.

Please note that the Saturday and Sunday night pub meets will remain unchanged.

Hopefully, the event will revert to Old Warden in 2019.

All the weekend's activities are open to ALL pre-war cars

As always, our designated charity is the RAF Charitable Trust.

Come and enjoy a nostalgic day of pre-war motoring, vintage aviation and socializing
at the timeless and historic Old Warden airfield!

Tiger Moths lined up at the inaugural Pre-War Shuttleworth in 2017 where visitor were treated to a dramatic  'Diamond Nine' formation.

Below we hope you will find all the information you need to make your weekend a most enjoyable one.
If you have any questions, or need any further information or help in booking accommodation, simply e-mail us.

The Vintage Minor Register was founded at VSCC Prescott in August 2000 and held its very first Summer Rally in 2001, starting from
the Royal Oak, Barrington, Cambridgeshire on a Saturday morning and ending up at Old Warden to join in one of the Shuttleworth Trust’s sunset air displays.
We concluded the day with a magnificent dinner in the Shuttleworth Mansion House, so the chosen location for our new annual rally could not be more appropriate.
Like Pre-War Prescott, the watchword for the weekend will be RELAXED!

The weekend will include an informal pub reception on Saturday evening, a pre-war Garden Party and Vintage Picnic at the Shuttleworth Trust
in conjunction with the de Havilland Moth Club on Sunday and the weekend will conclude with a farewell pub run on Sunday evening.

There is no entry form or entry fee required for pre-war cars, but an entry list has been started, and we need everyone who plans to attend on Sunday to contact us
at vintageminor@gmail.com with their vehicle details so that we can provide the entries to the Trust in advance.
(Note that entry to the aerodrome is FREE for our pre-war cars, although standard charges apply should you wish to visit the Collection,
payable in advance or on the day.)

The Weekend Itinerary

Saturday Evening

The Greyhound at Haynes

On Saturday evening, we will gather for an Informal Reception for early arrivers.   We shall meet at the historic Greyhound, at Haynes.
The Greyhound is a 17th Century traditional English pub set in beautiful surroundings.
Delicious seasonal pub fare and carefully selected real ales and fine wines will be available
and there is a large beer garden and ample parking.  All welcome from opening time onwards.

The Shuttleworth Story

Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth was a racing motorist, aviator and prolific collector of veteran cars and aircraft.
His collection forms the nucleus of the Shuttleworth Collection.  Richard was killed in an air crash on an RAF training exercise in 1940.
The Shuttleworth Trust was set up by Dorothy Shuttleworth in memory of her son.
View this short YouTube film about Richard's life and legacy here and here is a longer film about this unique collection of historic vehicles and aircraft.

Sunday

The Shuttleworth Pre-War Garden Party and Vintage Picnic

In conjunction with the de Havilland Moth Club's Gathering of Moths

We will spend the day in relaxing style and pre-war atmosphere at the Shuttleworth Trust, Old Warden where we will
be parking our pre-war cars right on the flight line adjacent to more than eighty pre-war de Havilland Moths.
The Museum, adjacent Swiss Garden and the restoration workshop shop  will all be open all day.
Bring a picnic hamper or visit the onsite restaurant.

Note that the day will be open to the general public, but the Trust will have parking reserved for us right on the flight line.
There will also be an opportunity at lunchtime to visit the flight line and chat with the pilots and crews of the visiting Moths
and inspect their magnificent vintage aeroplanes at close quarters.

Not only, but also ...

The Shuttleworth Trust Collection and workshop will be open all day.

The airfield restaurant will be open all day.

The adjacent Swiss Garden will be open all day.

Adjacent to the aerodrome is the Swiss Garden, an outstanding example of the Regency fashion for creating landscapes in a picturesque alpine style.
It is a peaceful, tranquil space, and one which has new vistas revealed at every turn.  Within the garden are 13 listed structures,
an adjacent woodland sculpture trail and three resident peacocks.  It’s a delight to explore.

Sunday Evening

The Hare and Hounds, Old Warden

On Sunday evening, after the Moths have flown, we will take a short farewell run into Old Warden village and gather
at the delightful and timeless Hare & Hounds where more great food and fine ales will be available.

We hope you enjoy the weekend!
