JV 291/MG 1930
Any recommendations for a supplier of laid up vehicle insurance? I have recently bought a M type to restore and want to insure the car against fire and theft.

The car started life as JV291 and was registered in early1931 it currently carries the registration mark MG1930. It will be a couple of years before I get it back on the road; keeping the model A in good shape is a full time job especially if I trial the thing! I'll have all on to have it (the A) ready for the Measham in January. Anyway M type in garage now and I have started to assess just what I have bought.

It is a little ironic that the registration number MG 1930 has apparently never appeared on a 1930 MG. It is very clear that the original car to display this number is a 1929 example!

In the interest of correctness I wonder if it would be possible to restore the correct JV 291 registration - probably well worth looking into and so much more pleasing to return the car to its genuine identity.

Might not be so simple as that. JV 291 is actually an early 1931 Grimsby registration number. JV 146 was the first car registered in Grimsby on New Year's Day 1931, and JV 863 was the last car registered in 1931 (check the 2-letter Index marks spreadsheet available in the Members' Area of the website), so JV 291 probably dates from about May or so? Does the MMM Register have the chassis file for this car? Do you have the chassis nuumber?
Edited to add that the DVLA website tells us nothing more - the registration was first allocated to this vehicle 27/10/81, which, presumably, was when JV 291 was removed.

Now that this thread has been comprehensively hijacked, here's a couple more images of MG 1930.

Must get some Plus-fours to keep the turn-up's out of the oil during maintenance, does one use spats, gaiters or long hairy socks as an accessory?

Here is a picture of the vehicle that currently carries the registration mark MG 1930. It was originally registered as JV 291 in Grimsby in March 1931.
It would have made my day if it had been the much photographed MG 1930 that was much used on MCC trials and I intend to use my MG 1930 in some of the MCC events; the same hills are used and it would be fun to repeat some of the old photos. The original MG 1930 was owned by a Mr C Robinson, by a remarkable coincidence I bought the car from a C. Robinson!
When the previous owner acquired what is now my car it did not have any documentation but painted onto a number plate sized piece of metal was MG1930. Thinking this was the registration number the former owner wrote the DVLC and was sent a log book with the registration mark MG 1930. It was only years later that he found out the original reg was JV 291; through someone in the VSCC, I believe. Anyway, the sad car shown here will be back on the road one day but not for a couple of years I suspect as I need to completely rebuild every part and find a few that are missing.

Splendid - you must be very pleased with your acquisition.
It is a pity that it is post-vintage, so not Light Car eligible. Do you envision entering main club VSCC trials with it?
At least you won't have to keep it standard for the LCES!

I am informed that JV 291 is on the MG Triple M M-type register as chassis number 2M 2620 with a build date 17/2/31 and it was blue. Its first owner was Bert Frame who bought it in Grimsby. It is mentioned in an article in Motor Sport April 1948 when owned by Lt A B Denmans RNVSR. I believe I have the very article somewhere - I will try to look it out and forward a copy.
If your chassis is indeed 2M 2620 one would hope the original number could be salvaged with such good evidence.
And by the way, returning to the thread, I recall Footman James covered a car for me while it was being restored and the price seemed very reasonable. It would not hurt to ask.

Yes please! If you could scan the article I would be very interested to see it. There is also a picture of JV291 in a a VSCC Bulletin printed a few years ago. It would be interesting to find out what happened to the first MG 1930.
