Clutch Levers

Hi - when I fitted my clutch I could not find any felt washers so I made some out of felt sheet. I notice that they are not surviving very well.
Two questions: has anyone sucessfully changed these washers with the engine/gearbox still in the car? - any tips?
has anyone replaced these felt washers with modern materials?
