Colin, I am not an engineer but I do have over 50 years knowledge of driving vintage cars. If you have over 60psi when hot I do not think you nhave a big end problem. Before you drop the sump - have you run the engine 'light' i.e. tick over for say 10 minutes? This should get the oil round the engine and if it still knocks they drop the sump and look. Are youn too far advanced? Does retarding the engine make the knock less? I do not know where you live but John Kirkby (Croydon) has done all my metal work for years and he is very good. Use and enjoy your minor, older cars are noisey and it takes some time to get used to them. Highlander.

Good point It may be too far advanced?I hope so, be easier to fix than taking engine out you have given me hope,,
