Re: VMR Summer Rally 2012

A very enjoyable and challenging weekend. Thanks Ian + team for all of your efforts. We were worried as we drove through torrential rain in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire on Friday afternoon. I was really pleased that the Morris was on the trailer and that we were not causing chaos driving through t...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

I set off to lift the engine out. I found that with the floorboards out of the way and all mountings released the front of the engine could be lifted high enough to make it worth trying to remove the timing chain cover without removing the engine. I did have a bit of luck. The large, long stud remov...

Re: Brake bodges

Hi Philip, I made a basic Jig that helped me to repair my backplates http://www.vintageminor.co.uk/Forum1/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=983&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=240 . If I was to make it again I think that I would include something in the middle to locate the back plate (perhaps an...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

Thanks Trevour, I will sleep on it and flip a coin in the morning - either take the engine out or just put the Oil Pump back on and not investigate my clatter. Taking the engine out with all the bulkhead etc in place looks quite awkward with those wide engine mountings. I did wonder whether it would...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

Thanks Ian, Halbe and all - decided to investigate low oil pressure. I dropped the oil pump from the car and took it, and my spare one to the Engineers to see if they could re-surface the plate on the best one. Not sure how they will remove the pin from the plate? While that was in progressI decided...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon --> 806 YUJ

JF 4238 becomes 806 YUJ . Not a very interesting registration number, wonder if I can find a Mr Yuj who is small enough to fit in a Minor? I am only 6' 1" tall but, even with the seat as far back as I can get it, I find it quite difficult to fit in the car. I suppose a clever chap might have tr...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

Pleased to report that JF4238, or whatever it becomes, passed its MOT today. It was quite cosy driving around with the MOT Tester (my size plus a bit) and myself while he was clutching the brake meter. Thought it rude to ask if the meter registered anything, but he appeared happy. Will visit the loc...

Re: Improving M type brakes on OG 2438.

Ian and Ian, you were right! I had adjusted the brakes very carefully using the hand brake. After reading this thread I re-adjusted them using the foot brake (I used a ratchet strap fixed to the front axel and the brake pedal to get the initial set-up}, and yes, they work much better now! - not mana...

Re: Improving M type brakes on OG 2438.

You have me worried now Ian, why should I not have used the handbrake for adjusting the brakes? I set the brakes (mind I still cannot lock the wheels!) so that they rotated freely; then set the handbrake on one click; went round adjusting individual cables so that they offered the same resistance wh...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

Hi Ronald, I am using a DK4A distributor with the automatic advance retard. I had set the timing so that it is on TDC (ish) static. I did check that the advance was working - I wonder if the retard is 'sticking' a bit and perhaps causing the 'tinkle'? I will have another go with the timing light. Wi...

Re: JF 4238 1933 Minor Saloon

The engine pulls quite well and idles smoothly. The tappets are set at 18Thou cold (I tried setting them at 5 Thou but the engine, while running much quieter, it shut down after 15 minutes of running). I need the assistance of someone who knows what these Sidevalve Engines should sound like. I have ...

What's missing?

started to tidy up and started to wonder if I had enough bits to make a spare engine. Nothing much on TV tonight, so what am I missing? { Engine number 30632 MG 199243F should it have an early head?}

Missing:
  • rear roller bearing housing
    4 valves
    1 valve guide
