Peter's Porsche visit

Post by Ian Grace »

Many of you will have met our friend Peter Balding at our summer rallies and seen his Porsche 911. He and his wife Ally have just taken an interesting trip with it to the continent. Here is his report:

"The Porsche Club of UK organises 2 trips per year to the Porsche factories in both Leipzig and Stuttgart. So we have just returned from a very memorable trip which I must say was extremely well organised. During the Leipzig visit which was first up we were able to test drive on their 4X4 track up hills and down through small rivers etc. and then drive several Porsche models round their F1 approved racing track. Great fun and wished we could have done a few more laps. Even got to drive the new Panamera which had been launched only a few days before. The visit to the factory was quite amazing with their automated transport systems and a few robots but the whole place sparkling clean. Typical German stuff. We had a day off and went to visit Colditz which is not too far. What a an amazing experience was - to be in the same courtyard and pass through the same doors, etc. and listen to the stories of the guide, just superb.

Then down to Stuttgart to see the magnificent new Porsche museum and their factory. Again, quite stunning. On the last evening we had a dinner in this very nice schloss which had also had a race track in the grounds. 5 of the very important folk from Porsche attended in celebration of Ferry Porsche's 100th birthday (which was the next day. Ally and I sat next to the man who designed all the engines including the TAG used by Maclaren F1. What a lovely gentleman now in his late 70s but full of stories etc.)
