Camshaft Drive Pinion

Post by D Johnson »

A friends Morris was making a noise suspected to be from the dynamo. Since taking the dynamo off I have found that the camshaft drive pinion has about 1.5mm of end float. I have dismantled the pinion shaft assembly and found that the original roller bearing has been replaced with a bonze bush.

Does anyone have any pictures or exploded diagrams of what the original assembly should look like?

Does anyone know how the end float was originally set on the pinion shaft?

Thanks for your help

Hi David,

Interesting question. Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think end float in the vertical drive pinion is a problem. There are springs behind the bevel gear on the camshaft that push the bevel gear in to mesh, so the pinion can't go anywhere and if you have the camshaft springs and thrust wsashers set up right, then the whole setup is self-aligning.

The attached exploded diagram may help. The head is not Minor , but the attachments are basically the same.
