Can anyone identify this gearbox?

Post by Ian Grace »

Gabriel Ohman reports that he has a 4-speed gearbox in his M Type - stamped with model number 74 and the gears for the speedo are 3/12 (OHC MInor was 4/17 I believe). The serial number stamped on the casing is 10890. Can anyone say from what car it comes? Minor, Wolseley Hornet? Gabriel believes that the serial number is too high for an M Type (only 3,200 or so made, and their engine numbers reflect that), but were the gearboxes also stamped in separate number sequences like the engines, or combined with Minor production? I haven't been keeping records of gearbox serial numbers, so have no clue! Thoughts anyone?

Ian. Some more information would be useful ; a picture, has it got synchromesh on top and third, has it got a remote gear lever, is the output coupling a three leg spider or for a hardy spicer propshaft, is the bell housing and end cover cast iron with an aluminium centre section, what are the gear positions- where is first & reverse.
