Re-covering fabric saloons

Post by Ian Grace »

We have several members that are currently re-fabricking or about to re-fabric saloon bodies.

The tricky part is the fabric at the rear which is pinched (along with piping) into the vertical joints either side of the window. In order to fabric correctly, the ash frame had to be unbolted to do this, but this is barely possible.

The rear quarter sections carry a row of 1/4 BSW captive bolts which insert either side of the rear panel and then secured with nuts applied inboard the rear panel. A similar row of bolts descends from the roof at the rear. In order to remove the rear quarters the roof would have to come off to release the "B" pillars carrying the door hinges, each of which has a peg locating in the roof side rail. And to compound the problem, the rear quarter panels integrate the wooden inner wheel "cheeks" which are screwed laterally into the wheel arches, the latter being integral with the floor.

It may be simpler to fabric the rear in one piece and add 'dummy' piping down these joints - if that is possible.

Has anyone successfully caried out a fabric body recover in the correct way in living memory?

I'll add some photos shortly.
