loose wheels/hot brakes

Post by Toby »

I encountered a problem recently which serves as a warning! I nipped up the slack in my rear brake cables without time to roadtest before a trip from Reading to north of Oxford, then to Bourton Glos. I thought that if there was a problem I could just slacken off the cable a bit, and so it was! One side started burning off so I backed them of again. By the time I reached Bouton o t water 2 wheel nuts were off and the 3rd was just clinging on. I put the bad handling down to the spares I'd taken on board at Oxford! No damage was done but I assume the problem came about through the heat and expansion softening the plastic coatiung on the hub/compressing the threads, then contracting on cooling leaving the loosened nuts on the offside to wind off under inertia? Check your nuts if you get hot wheels!!!
