Hi Chris,

What a great run(way) up to the summerrally.
I really look forward to be there ,and enjoy some more of the Suffolk countryside
When we left for Holland last time, my navigator told me to turn left at a roundebout, after about 45 minutes of beautifull scenery we came upon a sign that said , Botesdale 3 miles
I was very glad that we left early enough to catch the ferry.

Good morning Halbe,

Will you be bringing the Aston or a modern? All pre-war cars are eligible for our rallies. I am working to get the Rally web
page together and also to get the entry form out on the website shortly.

As usual, there will also be a team entry form for teams of 3 cars in the nav rally. So I need a Minor team for the Lewis & Nicholson Challenge (Minors versus the Austin Sevens), plus I'd like to see a SV team, and M Type team and an EMS team this year. We may also get a Morris Specials team from the Morris Specials Group.

Hi Halbe,
That 'Runway' is in fact just part of the the Thorpe Abbotts perimeter track. I wonder if the farmer would let us sprint our Minors along there?

Ian,

I'll bring the Aston with kind permission of Chris.
The last time I drove on a runway was at Brooklands with Mort Morris Goodell as pasenger.
He told me that they were just as bad before the war, so no excuse not to visit them in 2008.

I can't see the Photobucket images on my office PC. GE suppresses them. But I popped home for lunch and took a look. That stretch of peritrack looks far too good to waste. We should think about either some sort of sprint (would probably lead us into all sorts of RAC MSA contortions) or better, some driving tests, which I think can be timed without MSA reference - I'll check.

Is it long enough to land a light aircraft on?

Ian,
It is long enough and flat enough to land squadrons of the things. The issue is that this land is not owned by the museum but by a local farmer.

A couple more images from my Rally recce trip this morning. The amazing thing is that anything remains nearly 63 years after the events of WW2.

Nature taking its course at Fersfield. This 'drome was a Top Secret US site and many strange things occurred here.

This is all that is left of the Peri track at Knettishall, close to the little village of Coney Weston.

I'm currently assembling the rally website, but in the meantime, you might like to take a look at the 100th Bomb Group's wonderful website:

And here is the 100th Bomb Group Thorpe Abbotts Museum's website:

Chris,

We need to use the Landranger 1:50000 series sheets. Explorer are 1:25000. Looks like we'll need 144 and 156. Can we avoid 155?

Thorpe Abbotts, B17's and Morris cars.

Whilst looking through Century Bombers, Richard Le Strange's excellent book about the 100th Bomb Group, I found this image with a Morris connection. Now how could something like this happen?

The light coloured patches on the fin and elsewhere are there to repair holes made by shrapnel and bullets!

Chris , and all.

Just looking through my insurance policy document , Clause 42a subsection 3b states that I'm not covered for WW2 bombers landing on my car !!

So I'd better not come then !

Mmmmmmmmmmm !

Chris , and All

However !

I do seem to be covered , Clause 56a subsection 5c , for crashing into WW2 Bombers .

So that's OK then.

See you there.
