The Hatchgate meet this Sunday

Post by Ian Grace »

As mentioned on the home page, the meet this Sunday marks the tenth anniversary of our founding Hampshire/Berkshire pub meet, which was the very first pub meet that we organized as a Register back in 2001.

Do please make every effort to make it on Sunday, and to bring your Minor/M if at all possible - cars/projects/heaps of rust on trailers equally welcome! Let's see if we can get a really good lineup for the cameras.

The Shoulder of Mutton - October 28th 2001 - our first ever pub meet ten years ago this month.

From M 106:

"Following the meeting between Paul Harris and John Price at the Shoulder of Mutton at Hazeley mentioned on page 3, the possibility of a more general gathering of the clan arose. After a number of telephone calls and e-mails, a plan hatched to meet at the pub for an informal Autumn Sunday lunch on October 28th. On the day, a magnificent collection of 8 vintage Minors turned up. Gren Strickland came along in his SV 2-seater, having at last sorted his engine woes, while Ken Martin turned up in his modern after his 1930 saloon suffered a burst radiator en route. New members Keith and Mary Petchell were also present, having driven from Carterton, and we hope to see their 1929 tourer out and about very soon. Furthest traveler was Clive Perkins and his son who drove up from Street in Somerset in Tiffy, the family 1930 saloon. Most meritorious arriver was undoubtedly MT 3286 conducted by Ronald and Heather Hogg, who drove from Dorset in their ’29 tourer MT 3286, which had passed its MoT days before, having been tucked away in a shed for 9 years."

Well, we were not able to take a similar picture today. Five Minors in total turned up (and a BIG thank you to those who did). There was a strong Bean Car Club attendance, but, after John Nagle's very good publicity of the event, not a single Morris Register member (who is not also a VMR member) turned up!

It is a great pity that, after ten years, and with a membership that is four times what it was in 2001, and with the inclusion of SV Minors and M Types, we can only muster just over half of the turnout we enjoyed in the early days of the Register. Simple maths would suggest that we should have had twenty or thirty Minors there today.

Here's the Cooksey's Duple-bodied Minor at the meet today - along with a one horsepower model. John Nagle photo.
