Summer Rally and Pre-War Prescott 2017

Post by Ian Grace »

Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July.

We are off and running with planning for this year's flagship Register weekend. 18 entries so far (we had three at this point last year).

Several clubs are joining us for the first time this year - the Bean Car Club, the Talbot Owners' Club and the British Hotchkiss Society. Also, the hugely enthusiastic Dutch MG Group will be joining us again this year. Motor Wheel Services will also be returning this year to join us again.

Some time next month (February) we should also hear from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and find out whether we have been allocated air support again.

The Pre-War Prescott website at http://www.prewarprescott.com is all set up for 2017 and entries can be made via that website. So everything is set up for this to be another record gathering in the glorious Cotswolds!

40 entries so far, including a fantastic 25 for Sunday which is 50% capacity, so if you are planning to enter wither the navigation rally or scenic tour on Sunday, probably a good idea to get your entry in soon.

The 2017 Summer Rally website is now live at http://vintageminor.co.uk/summerrally20 ... _2017.html.

In past years, we have enjoyed the awesome sight and sound of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster over Pre-War Prescott.

We can now announce that this year the Flight has allocated us their iconic 1942 Douglas C-47 Dakota ZA947.

ZA947 is currently painted to represent Dakota FZ692 of No 233 Squadron, around the D-Day period in 1944. This aircraft, which was named ‘Kwicherbichen’ by her crews, was involved in para-dropping operations on the eve of D-Day and subsequently in re-supply and casualty evacuation missions into and out of forward airfields in the combat areas. The female nurses who escorted the casualties on these flights became known as ‘The Flying Nightingales’. By the end of 1944, 1,092 stretcher cases and 467 sitting wounded had been evacuated to England by the 233 Squadron Dakotas. The Dakota will make a stirring sight and sound over the hill on Saturday.

To read more about the 233 Squadron operations, Dakota FZ692 ‘Kwicherbichen’ and aeromedical casualty evacuation in 1944, visit http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/theaircraft/dakotafz692.cfm.

Confirmations are beginning to arrive. Of course the big news is that we have the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's 1942 C-47 Dakota booked(http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/theaircraft/ ... istory.cfm). But on the ground we have 2328 Squadron (Bishops Cleeve) Air Training Corps (http://www.2328atc.org.uk/) joining us again, and the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association (http://www.lancasterassociation.co.uk/)as well as the local Gloucester & Warwickshire Railway display (http://www.gwsr.com/). Hillclimb record holder and worldwide rallyist Joy Rainey (http://www.bmsad.co.uk/introduction-1/c ... red-bloggs)is joining us again as our Guest of Honour and this morning Cotswold Motorsport (http://cotswoldmotorsport.com/ confirmed that they will be bringing something exotic to act as our course car for the day. Last year they brought a stunning brand new Aston - let's see what they come up with this year!

And also this morning we received five entries from the Dutch MG Group who will be joining us once again for the weekend. So all in all, the weekend is shaping up to be another excellent gathering in the glorious Cotswolds, to be followed the following weekend by our inaugural Pre-War Shuttleworth(http://www.vintageminor.co.uk/PWS%20201 ... 02017.html). All good stuff!

Just a quick update on that. Cotswold Motorsport confirmed this morning that they will be bringing three 'fast, loud and pretty' cars, including a Ferrari 458 (0 to 60 in 2.9 secs, top speed 240 mph), and we will be raffling a fast run up the hill in each of these cars, in aid of the RAF Charitable Trust.

Couple of quick updates.

I have been contacted by a group of Austrian vintage enthusiasts from Bad Ischl who are planning to join us this year. They will also be bringing a couple of pre-1930 motorbikes to add interest and variety. With the Dutch MG Group also joining us, and other cars arriving from the Continent, Pre-War Prescott is developing into a truly international occasion!

I have also been arranging with Bob Jones, who is a cyclecar guru, to organize a gathering of cyclecars at Prescott. We have had one or two cyclecars in the past, but we are hoping for a major display this year with a dozen or so of these fascinating cars.

All shaping up to be an excellent weekend!

Entries hit the 70 mark this morning, and of those, 27 are VMR members which is over 10% of the entire membership, and we still have just over three months to go. And we already have 33 entries for Sunday. Should be another super weekend.

Five Minors (all OHC) and six M Types entered so far.

Time to get your entry in if you haven't already done so!

Just hit the 100 mark, so about half the expected entries in. Ten Minor booked in so far, which is excellent. Let's have more and make it a record turnout!

The first items for the Pre-War Prescott auction are coming in. This will take place in the lunch break in the Paddock at the VMR marquee. The auction is being held for us by Hereford Vintage Auctions, and this year, for the first time, this will be a conventional auction, with the net proceeds going to the sellers and the commissions going to the RAF Charitable Trust. If you have any goodies you would like to include in the auction, please e-mail details and a photo if possible so that your lots can be added to the website in advance of the day.

Here's the link: http://vintageminor.co.uk/Auction%20PWP ... uction.htm

12 Minors and 13 M Types entered so far!

In all, 40 pre-war cars have already entered by VMR members!

148 total entries so far and 397 climbs booked out of a total available of around 475.

A record 20 entries for the Sunday nav rally and another record 38 for the scenic tour, with 94 cream teas! So with a entry of 58 for Sunday, its going to be a tremendous run.

Please get your entry in without delay so you can be ticketed, if you have not entered already.

This from Bob Richards:

"Free entry to the Vintage Minor Register Rally or Tour

Having entered Pre-war Prescott but not being able to attend because of illness, I will have an entry to give away for 'The Hidden Gloucestershire Rally and Scenic Tour' which will take place on Sunday 23rd July. This is open to any make of pre-war car.

The entry would allow you to take part in either the Navigation Rally or the Scenic Tour and tickets for two cream teas at the finish will be included. It is not necessary for you to attend the Pre-war Prescott meeting on the previous day.

I will pass on the entry and tickets to the first person to reply but before you do that, please refer to the Pre-war Prescott website for full details of what is involved."
