2014 Summer Rally

Post by sv4670 »

Ian

Thank you for organising the event, pity about the weather but it did not spoil the weekend for us. I am sure the numbers were down because of the foul weather - we almost came in the modern but a model A can cope with pretty much anything and it came through without incident. The rally was great fun but I suspect a bit too challenging for those who have not competed in VSCC navigation rallies - I know one crew had to open the envelope with instructions for what to do in an emergency before they left the start at Prescott! That said no dumbing down please! It must have taken you days to put together such a detailed and informative route.
Jazz band was great and suited the event.
many thanks again

Yes Ian we too had a very enjoyable weekend. The rain was an interesting addition to the proceedings, but as the owner of a snug little saloon, we took it all in our stride.
The hill climbs were fun, but during the tour (we did not opt for the rally) we realised that the Prescott hill is perhaps not the most demanding hill in the Cotswolds!
The evening entertainment was great and it was nice to meet Mike Downey and thank him for all his help. When he said he would be at Prescott I did not realise that it would be as a jazz drummer.
So thanks for all the hard work that I know must be involved in organising such an event andlt's hope for some sunshine next year.
Incidentally did your VVIP and VIP, Sir Stephen Dalton and Lady Tanya Field attend?

About 40 weekend photos on Pre-War Prescott Facebook. A lot more to come.

Tanya was there, Steven was not. Tim Winstanley, the RAF CT Director was there, as was Elizabeth Halls with her Singet Ld Mans. We managed 275 climbs which wasn't bad given the conditions. I climbed in the afternoon amid lightning and a biblical deluge! It was so dark on the return road I needed headlights!

Just at Heathrow heading home after a super two weeks which seemed like a month. Prescott seems a long time ago as we have packed so much into the last ten days.

Spent two days in Cambridgeshire, visited Shuttleworth and the DH Heritage museum yesterday.

Alex Dempster is home in NZ and has posted both M149 and M150 today!

A quick analysis of photos shows that we had an amazing 20 Minors present at Pre-War Prescott this year. (We had 13 last year in perfect weather):

1 CV 3487 1930 saloon Colin Lee
2 VK 3672 1930 saloon Simon Hodgins
3 GU 1342 1929 Semi-sports rep. David Roscoe
4 WE 6554 1929 tourer Geoff Colquitt
5 VF 6700 1929 tourer Peter Stubberfield
6 OW 4224 1934 2-seater John Nagle
7 SV 9091 1929 tourer John Paternoster
8 APF 947 1933 2-seater John Burton
9 DG 325 1930 tourer Clive Hamilton-Gould
10 UY 8391 1930 CMS Philip Butland
11 BR 8606 1930 2-seater Sue Woodward
12 UF 7090 1930 saloon Martin Gregory
13 ANF 593 1934 2-seater Ian Roberts
14 WD 1430 1930 Saloon Stuart Clark
15 VJ 1756 1929 tourer Janie Shepherd
16 DS 9936 1929 tourer Peter Hills
17 TF 3362 1930 saloon Clive Perkins
18 VK 6518 1932 McEvoy Sarah Gibson
19 Red Minor SU Carburetters
20 White Minor David Baldock

We also had four M Types:

OY 1548 1932 M Type John Haine
CG 3949 1931 M Type Sportsman's Coupe Roger Burnett
PG 1045 1929 M Type Frank Ashley
KW 7956 1930 12/12 rep. Nigel Stroud

Have I missed anyone? To have such a record turnout in spite of the appalling weather, was a fantastic achievement. We were missing 3 Minors (one due to a hospital emergency) and 3 M Types that were booked in. This all bodes extremely well for 2015!

Now I need to jump on to Google Earth and put some pins in to see who won the Long Distance award - the Gilg Trophy.

Well it's a bit late, but we finally have a winner of the Gilg and Kay Long Distance Trophy.

As you may know, we inaugurated a new VMR award last year to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Gilg and Kay expedition to Cape Town. The award was presented by Andrew Gilg, son of the explorer Cameron Gilg and is awarded to the member who drives his Minor the furthest distance to our Summer Rally.

I am delighted to report that Peter Hills is the winner this year, having driven to the event from Putney in his 1929 tourer. Four Minors arrived from a further distance - but all arrived on trailers.

The award takes the form of a beautiful half scale replica of the Hispano Suiza serpent mascot that adorned Gilg's 1933 Morris Minor on its epic expedition.

Peter is a highly appropriate winner. He spends half his time in South Africa and half in London, and in London, his tourer is his ONLY car! Well done, sir!
