Steering box adjustment

Post by gubben »

Is it possible to adjust a steering box play? I can move the shaft (that is connected to the drag link) a little. On top of the box there is a stop nut and something which I guess can be a adjuster nut...

Hi Thomas,

Your 1931 Minor has the early worm and wheel steering box, which has a couple of adjustments. First, there is the bolts and locknut on the top which you have discovered which can eliminate end float of the main gear wheel connected to the drop arm.

Then there is a second adjustment that can be made. If you strip the box, you will find that this wheel can be located in one of three positions, each 120 degrees apart. Rotating it 120 degrees so that a new sector of the gear teeth engage with the sipral worm on the bottom of the steering column inner rod can eliminate play at the steering wheel.

If you still have side play in the main gear wheel shaft as it exits the box and connects with the drop arm, you will have to re-bush the steering box itself.
