One small trick for stopping the gear lever rattling in the top ball cup is to find a piece of leather, cut a hole in it, and place it over the ball before you put the cover in place.... it also aids keeping oil IN the gearbox... 'slightly'..!

You should be able to take it to any bearing specialist and they could measure it and most likely find a replacement..... i would be very interested in seeing pictures.... are you going to remove the layshaft..?? as in my box it seems to be 2nd that makes most noise, ie using the layshaft... third i...

You have a better memory than i do Ian.... unless its all on reg no/chassis number spreadsheets!!

The fabric does look a bit course...... if that makes sense.

I can just imagine old cars being dragged out of barns, fresh petrol chucked in them get them running and off you go........... first corner,.............. damn, no brakes....!! worn out steering, dangerous bodywork...... alsorts of other things could and would cause issues.......... Lee, when you refitted the dynamo, did you check the mesh in the lower gear..??? if its loose, then it would cause lots of noise, there is also a slight chance that when the clutch is pressed as you say the end float is being taken up and the noise reduced..... it might take only a very thin shim to...

Ian, Mum's curious as to who the 'four' might be.......... and as for a run on boxing day, it does sound like a good idea, however, i have become a fair weather vintage motorist,... i did a run on new yrs day last yr, only local but about 40 miles.... it was bitterly cold, and i vowed never again......

I spent a little while today with MT running, i have tried to carry on dad's tradition of getting every car that we own that will run, running......... so MT got a through warm through........... and i nearly died from CO poisoning.........!

I used them to rebuild the dynamo on MT, however, i think i connected it wrong, it still doesn't work..............!
