Re: A gearbox rebuild

I think visible parts like this were probably quite well polished but to what extent is hard to tell. When you see the rather dull and tarnished finish on unrestored examples which have been well looked after it tends to be very smooth and fine as though the finish was very good to start out . The i...

Re: A gearbox rebuild

Jeremy Hawke has taken a couple of new pictures of Sarah Gibson's car which he has put up on the Triple M Forum (Jeremy says the car is about 50 yards from where he lives). The photos show the remote without the 'upholstery' and it seems clear that it is the same design as the one on the Triple M Fo...

Re: A gearbox rebuild

Just as a matter of interest a contributor to the MG Triple M Forum on a theme entitled "M type 4 speed with Derrington remote" has put up this image - http://www.triple-mregister.org/forums/uploads/Fergus/201410110_1412155386276.jpg I am not sure if it is a Derrington example but I notice...

Re: Speedometer Ratios on Four Speed Gearboxes

I assume three speeds are 4/17 (is this marked somewhere?) but as you can see four speeds vary. Right hand example is a synchromesh version. I think the one on the left might be yours Ian (I cannot recall where I found the image).Could it be that the non synchromesh four speed was considered more 's...

Re: Speedometer Ratios on Four Speed Gearboxes

The difference between 3/12 and 4/17 viewed simply as fractions does not seem very significant. Is it possible a change in wheel size might have been a factor?

Speedometer Ratios on Four Speed Gearboxes

It seems most common for '74' Minor four speed gearboxes to be marked with a 4/17 speedometer ratio but some are marked 3/12. I assume 4/17 is Morris Minor. Is 3/12 associated with the Family Eight? http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3786/12952310765_fd7ef6abe5_b.jpg Are any other speedometer ratios seen...

Re: M type/ Minor differentials

Indeed I believe it is a Morris 8 diff. I understand it will fit a Minor/M-type axle which is why I have it in reserve.

Re: M type/ Minor differentials

I wonder what the 'S' signifies in the case.

Re: Gearbox product codes

I am not sure if the 3 speed came into the scope of the numbering system - the list is a work in progress and can be added to or subtracted from as we discover more.

Re: Gearbox product codes

This has taken a lot of time and thought but I think I have it, more or less. It is not as complex as I make it sound. Forgive me if you already know the following or know better. This is only my opinion and not established fact…. I believe the problem is that the numbers which we see stamped on gea...

Re: Gearbox product codes

The D in India looks very good.I would love to see more pictures.I wonder if it has a 3 or 4-speeed gearbox. Ian, I was forgetting you have a special interest in D-types. In the 4-speed gearbox context I have five very basic questions - 1 Were any 4-speed gearbox model numbers originally seen on Min...

Re: Gearbox product codes

I am keeping Ted up to date with research. Apparently the very complete D-type chassis files show that some surviving D-types started out with MG 4-speed gearboxes.Ted is checking to see if any of the gearboxes have survived.

Re: Gearbox product codes

Trevor I understand. I have the same gearbox (more or less) and access is a problem now that it is under carpet. I managed to get a look at where the number should be at the front of the box but it either isn't there or is hidden under the paint. The speedo ratio is even more difficult to get at and...

Re: Gearbox product codes

Ah! Thanks Ian.I am afraid I had difficulty reading the scan the first time and skimmed it badly when I read "Engine Numbers" on a Gearbox thread. That will teach me to read things properly. http://www.vintageminor.co.uk/Forumpix/Product%20codes.JPG All this relates to Wolseley derived gea...

Re: Gearbox product codes

I have only just realised that we now have the answer to the question which started this thread. '51' is a Wolseley Hornet box.By the way because this gearbox probably started out with a Wloseley remote fitting a J remote is straight forward. http://www.vintageminor.co.uk/Forumpix/Gearbox.JPG I am s...
