Re: Rear hub bearings
Simon, I believe you are correct about self-aligning types not being suitable. I only mentioned them in passing. Equally, I don't recall being aware of slot-filled bearings. There is a lot of information in the SKF General Catalogue, but I've selected 4 scans that might prove interesting. 'Selection...

Re: The VMR Magazine
Super 'Technical Topic' in M176 on Rear Hub Bearings. I agree with Simon's view that a high torque on the retaining nut seems unnecessary, since no pre-load is expected on a ball bearing - compared to a Taper Roller bearing where the correct pre-load is critical - and the presence of a lock washer s...

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Thanks Ian. I probably should also have asked for the inside spacing of the wheels/tyres, as that's important if the tailer's not a flatbed.

Weights & Dims?
Ian, do you have the approx. weight and outer dimensions of the 'Maddox', from a trailering perpsective?
Thanks, Paul.

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Continuing the brake union thread, these can become seized. I've recently had great success with this handy tool (see picture) which clamps securely around a Flare Nut, even better than a conventional flare nut spanner. A standard spanner, even a full ring type, can struggle on a seized nut as by de...

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Thanks Ian. Good to see that both unions have remained serviceable. It's scary how easy it is to twist a brake line like that.
The flares look like 'simple' single type, rather than double or bubble that may be seen today?

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Great update, Ian. Thank goodness for better weather - improving here too. Are there many possible variations on the brake unions' dimensions? Presumably Imperial, then are there different thread options (dia. & pitch)? That's before getting onto the type of flaring required? Any photos of these...

Re: UK driving licenses
Ian, There's a lot of Q&A on such topics on the DVLA website. The challenge is finding the right 'Q'. Do you have a record of your UK licence number? That would help a lot, ideally along with the last UK registered address then you could just apply for replacement. If you have your licence numbe...

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Hi Ian, That is great news. A nice reminder to always check the basics, before assuming the worst! Hopefully this post will include 3 photos - 2 are old Ads from The Autocar magazine, and 1 is a collection of Letterheads I collected some years ago. Best regards, Paul IMG_2655.JPG IMG_2654.JPG IMG_26...

Re: 1933 Maddox Fixed head Coupe EN 5810
Ian. Fantastic to have discovered this thread. I had 'on file' the B&W picture of EN 5810 (shown above), but wasn't aware the vehicle still existed. Even better to learn that you plan to return the car to England. Archie Maddox was my Grandfather, who sadly died relatively young in 1944. To-date...
