Thanks Ian, yes it was the metal panel I was refering to. Hadn't thought about the speedo drive, but at least compared to my MGB it's reasonably accessible.
I understand the wires aren't colour coded like moderns, and are cotton tape wrapped with coloured identifiers at the connection points

Re-wire M Type
When I say re-wire, I'm not really that clever, but I plan to replace some dodgy wiring in the coil/distributor/dynamo region, and particularly the connection of positive side of the coil to the ignition. Any tips/pics on how best to route the wires would be very welcome. Is the dash removed just by...
